VKL / AKF - Melbourne Open

Sunday February 25, 2018, saw 8 students from NGK display and use their aquired skills at the first leg of the 2018 Victorian Karate League Tournament, competing at the 'Melbourne Open' held at Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough. It was a great day for all competitors (and some 'newbies' to this level of competition). Richard Duff took home 1st place in his kata division, performing Kata Seipai in his final round.

Richard Duff and Mark Nuzzolese fought it out in a highly contested round in the Finals of the 35-45 years 4th Kyu and above division, taking a 1st and 2nd place.
James Vidos, placing 2nd, did an amazing job in his Kumite event (which was merged with higher grades) and held his ground and displayed great spirit and determination.
William Duff, Mia Lazzara (newbie), and Summer Wakefield (newbie) competing for 3rd place in events, but were unlucky to secure the round, taking 4th place.
Zach Wakefield (newbie) and Julian Piaza competed in the largest events of the day (in both Kata and Kumite), and whilst they may not have taken a place, they learnt from the event.
All students did exceptionally well and made us all proud.
A special mention goes to William Duff for his amazing effort in his Kumite division, scoring 14 to 5 in his first round to take the win, taking his second round with Senshi at 2 to 2, losing his 3rd round 2 to 1 to the competitor who eventually took 1st place, and in his final round playing for 3rd or 4th place, lost the round 4 to 0, but fought brilliantly...Ooss!

2 x GOLD, 2 x SILVER, and 3 x fourth places

On a final note, i would like to thank the organisers, officials, referees, table staff, and first aid personnel for making the event an enjoyable one. Thank You!

Sempai Eireen is in contention to take out 3 State Titles, and her preparation for these events is always ongoing. Keep up the hard work Eireen.

Nathan Paoli, Aiden Flynn, Corey Hannel, George Abou Yaghi, Matthew Choureemootoo and Sensei John Choureemootoo have also qualified for the State Titles and will need to work hard over the coming months on both their kata and kumite.

 2013 ISKA Tournament

October 27th, 2013

On Sunday October 27th, Nathan, Matthew and Sensei John proved once again that Northern Goju Karate students have what it takes at the top end. All three competitors took home trophies and proved themselves to be great competitors and contenders, whilst displaying brilliant sportsmanship.

Nathan took home a 2nd place trophy for his Continuous Sparring division, and a 3rd place trophy for his Point Sparring Division. Matthew took home a 3rd place trophy for his Point Sparring Division and Sensei John took home a 2rd place trophy for the Men's Black Belt Open Point Sparring division.

Nathan and Matthew both did very well in their kata divisions, both placing 4th.

2013 NAS Rd 3 Vic Tournament

September 22, 2013

On Sunday September 22nd, Sensei John, Sempai Eireen, Corey, George, Aiden and Matthew represented Northern Goju Karate at the 2013 NAS Rd 3 VIC Tournament, and made us all proud.

Sensei John (1x2nd Place - Sparring), Sempai Eireen (2x2nd Place - Kata and Sparring) and Corey (1x3rd Place - Sparring) all excelled in their divisions and took home trophies. Others did extremely well throughout, although they were unfortunate not to place in the top 3.

Sempai Eireen's Kata was faultless once again, and she dominated in her sparring event.

Sensei John showed what it takes to win in the Men's Point Sparring division, proving his dominance on the court. He won his first round comfortably. He won his second round (was leading by 3 points) and then was heavily kicked in the groin, in which Sensei John was in agonising pain, and still pushed through and continued in this final round, but was slower n his feet due to the previous kick. Sensei John still managed to score, but lost the round with only one point separating the competitors. Great effort Sensei John.

George, competing for his first time, got through 3 rounds of Point Sparring, and 2 rounds of Point Sparring, proving he was a great contender. He was sharp and techniques were extremely effective in racking up the score tally. Well done George.

Corey, the underdog in his division (a 5th Kyu in the 5th to Black Belt division) proved how much work he had done with his Kata and managed to come 4th in his division. A great result. In Continuous Sparring, he got 3rd place, and did great in his Point Sparring, but was pipped by a serious Black Belt competitor. Great effort and great results Corey.

Aiden, did very well in his Kata division, performing Kata Saifa. In his sparring event, he moved and blocked to perfection, but could not seem to land his techniques quick enough to take victory. Well done Aiden. Keep up your hard work.

Matthew, our lowest ranked competitor at the competition, showed how far he has come in such a short period of training. His Kata was sharp and clean, and so was his Sparring. Although he did not place, he gained valuable experience at the tournament and will prove to be a real contender in future competitions.

Again, well done to all.

The tournament was held at the Boroondara Sports Complex, 271c Belmore Road, North Balwyn.

 ISKA Round 3 VIC Tournament

August 18, 2013

On Sunday August 18th, John Choureemootoo and Matthew Choureemootoo competed at the International Sports Karate Association (I.S.K.A.) Tournament, held at the RMIT Bundoora Netball & Sports Centre. It was a long and exciting day for all. Whilst Matthew was unlucky to take home a trophy at his first ever tournament, it was a great leaning experience. Both John and Matthew represented themselves and N.G.K. honourably. Sempai Mohammed made a guest appearance to show support, whilst recovering from exhaustion after his grading the day before. Sensei Adrian was courtside and refereed several events throughout the day. In one of the most anticipated events of the day, John Choureemootoo proved himself a contender in the Male Black Belt 18-35yrs Point Sparring division earning a 2nd place.

Well done guys....

 Black Belt Grading

August 17, 2013

Northern Goju Karate (N.G.K.) and Beginner To Black Belt Goju Karate (B.B.B.G.K.) students had the opportunity to prove their skills and advance through their ranks in a combined N.G.K. & B.B.B.G.K. Grading. Sempai Eireen Daskalou and Sempai Mohamed Tahey of NGK, along with BBBGK students, displayed perseverance, dedication, hard work and elite skill at the grading. The grading ran for five hours from 1.30pm through 6.30pm, with great effort displayed throughout. Sempai Eireen's Kata was faultless, and was the highlight of the grading, with all other aspects of her grading also executed to perfection. Sempai Mohammed's effectiveness and intensity in his Kyogi was commendable and was commented on by the grading panel.

Sempai Eireen and Sempai Mohammed will receive their grading results soon enough, and in the mean time can reflect on their karate journey, thinking about how far they have come and how far they can ultimately continue to achieve.

Well done to all students who were privileged and skilful enough to attend and participate in the N.G.K. & B.B.B.G.K. Grading.

Ooss!!

2013 NAS Rd 2 Vic Tournament

June 29, 2013

Sensei Adrian Delia, Sempai Eireen Daskalou, Aiden Flynn, Nathan Paoli and Corey Hannell had the opportunity to display and put their skills to the test against other karate-ka's from various martial arts styles at the National All Styles (NAS) tournament and all performed exceptionally well.

The competition begin at 9.00am, at the Boroondara Sports Complex, 271c Belmore Road, North Balwyn, with Sempai Eireen competing early on in her Continuous Sparring event, once again proving that she is a real contender in her division, and at the upcoming State and National competitions soon to come.

Nathan Paoli was on shortly after, and proved himself to be amongst the competitions better end, placing 6th in Kata out of 32 competitors in his division. Great result especially given it was his first ever time to compete. Well done Nathan.

Nathan performed well through-out point sparring and continuous sparring, but nerves and experience got the better of him. Nathan performed well in his continuous sparring and looked like a contender until he was given a warning for contact, and then held back too much to give his opponent the edge.

Aiden Flynn competed in kata and point sparring and did well in both events. Aiden performed kata Saifa and should be proud of his performance. He placed sixth in his division, making it into the top half of the competition.

In point sparring, Aiden moved brilliantly and attacked and defended well. Aiden was unlucky to make it through to his next round, but with more experience and more training will prove himself a real contender.

Further into the day, Sempai Eireen competed in kata and point sparring. Performing kata Seisun, she proved herself a real competitor, blowing her competition away and placed 1st with a clear and undisputed margin. In her point sparring event, Sempai Eireen took another 1st place trophy home. Sempai Eireen left the mats with smiles a plenty. Well Done Eireen.

Corey Hannell waited and waited for his event to finally begin, and performed a brilliant kata Saifa. Corey was up against some strong competition and faced many Black Belts competitors who preformed much higher katas. Corey's performance was commendable, but was unlucky to not place. In his point sparring event, Corey managed to score against his black belt competitor, but was unfortunate not to take the lead and make it to the following rounds. Great effort Corey.

Nearing the end of the day, NGK students, friends and family got to see Sensei Adrian take to the mats, performing kata Seisun.

An enjoyable day for all, and a big thankyou to the family, friends and loved ones who showed their support.

Grading

June 8, 2013

On June 8th, twenty-four (24) students had the opportunity to demonstrate their acquired skills, in an attempt to achieve their next belt. It was a remarkable effort by all, and an opportunity for their parents, family and friends to see what they have achieved. The effort displayed and skills shown (especially by the lower grades) was so impressive that eight (8) students actually Double Graded, with special mention to Nathan Paoli who graded from Red Belt to Purple Belt, performing kata's and pre-arranged sparring well above his grade level.

Again congratulations to all who graded. Keep up the hard work and effort.

Sempai Eireen also took 1st Place in her Point Sparring (Kumite) division, defeating her competition over the four rounds.

Sempai Eireen also had a chance to get a 3rd place tropy in Continuous Sparring, winning her first two rounds, but unfortunately lost in her third round, leaving her fourth in her division.

Be sure to congratulate Sempai Eireen when you see her at the dojo.

Laurimar Town Fair

February 9, 2013

A big thank-you goes out to all who helped out with the set-up of our marquee, to those who helped by participating in the demonstration and to those who supported us throughout the day. It was a great opportunity for our up and coming students (esspecially the white belts) to get some hands on experience in the basics of sparring, and for them to see what they can look forward to experiencing throughout their karate journey with the higher levels of kata, higher levels of sparring and from the arnis display, which seemed to captivate our audience at the demo.

Again Thank-You.

 NAS NATIONAL TITLES

December 1 and 2, 2012...NAS National Championships

A huge thank you to Sempai Mohamed for helping out with Saturday's classes whilst I was at the National Championships with Sempai Eireen Daskalou.

A big congratulations goes to Sempai Eireen. Although she did not take home a tropy, Sempai Eireen proved herself as a real contender at a National Level, competing against some of Australia's great and upcoming Karate-ka's. Sempai Eireen competed against 27 other competitors in ker Kata event, the largest event of the competition, placing 5th overall, with only marginal points seperating the top 6 contenders. Performing 'Seisun' Kata to perfection, and after I had spoken with one of the referees after her event, it was gratifying to know that even the referee enjoyed watching Eireen perform, stating that he thought 'her kata was the best of the lot...and it was his favourite kata'. Congratulations goes out to Sempai Eireen for all the preperation and hard work throughout the tournament.

 UPCOMING NAS NATIONAL TITLES

December 1 and 2, 2012

Sempai Eireen will have a chance to compete for the National Championships in December, 2012.

Training and preperation is continually underway for the event and we wish Sempai Eireen all the very best.

National Championships...here we come.

Students are reminded that Sempai Mohamed will be taking the mornings classes on Saturday December 1, as Sensei Adrian will be courtside with Sempai Eireen, providing coaching and support at the tournament. This will provide an excellent opportunity for all students to train with Sempai Mohamed, who is dedicated to hard work and perfect technique, and will provide an opportunity to meet some of the junior students prior to the following weeks gradings. Senior students have already experienced Sempai Mohamed's enthusiasm and dedication to perfection.

Balintawak Arnis Seminar

October 31st, 2012

On Wednesday October 31st, 2012, students from NGK were invited and attended a Balintawak Arnis Seminar hosted by Sensei Chris Dimond of BBBGK at their North Balwyn dojo. Approximately 40 students (total) from both NGK and BBBGK were privelaged to meet and train with Grandmaster Bobby Taboada, in which turned out to be a fantastic seminar for all to enjoy and participate in. The seminar ran from 7.00pm till 8.45pm, with Grandmaster Bobby captivating his audience, as well as inspiring passers by. A big thank you goes out to Grandaster Bobby Taboada for taking the time to share his wealth of experience and for training, motivating and guiding our karate-ka's, and to Sensei Chris for inviting NGK to be a part of this rare opportunity, and a thanks to all that attended and helped to make this such a great and memorable experience.

Balintawak Arnis is a Filipino style of stick fighting that is based on speed and street effectiveness. The addition of a weapon in a self defence situation changes many things and it is very useful to have at least a bit of experience in dealing with a weapon.

...We all look forward to the next BBBGK and NGK seminar...

 CONGRATULATIONS - NAS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

October 6th, 2012

A huge congratulations goes out to Eireen Daskalou and Ilmi Azizoski for their efforts at the NAS 2012 State Championships.

Eireen placed equal 1st in her Kata event, performing an unfaultable 'Sunseiru', and on a highlight countback, was unfortunately awarded the 2nd place position. A fabulous effort from Eireen, with 20 competitors in her division.

A big congratulations and my deepest empathy to Ilmi Azizoski. Ilmi also placed equal first in his Kata event, and had to re-perform his Kata in an extremely close decision that even left the referees struggling to decide the final outcome for 1st and 2nd place. Ilmi was awarded 2nd place in a down-the-line decision in his kata event. Great Effort.

In Ilmi's point sparing event, Ilmi easily breezed through the first round, with a 7 to 1 win, and in his second round was winning a 3 to 0 round, with everything looking like he would be untouchable even in the finals, and with approximately 5-10 seconds left in his second round, he stepped wrongly and injured his foot. Ilmi was unable to continue, and was forced to forfeit the match. A great loss for such a great karate-ka. Ilmi will be out of action for a little while, but hopes to make a strong return at the Nationals Championships in December. Get better soon Ilmi....OOSS!!
